I became a Mary Kay Beauty Consultant on Jan. 17, 2011 (click on the words Mary Kay anywhere on this page to visit my website and see what’s new, or to join my team!).  This isn’t something I ever would have seen myself doing, but I really LOVE it!  Doing facials and makeovers with women is a lot of fun, and I get to meet so many new, interesting, inspiring, amazing women, that now I can’t imagine my life without Mary Kay.

I first met my Director, Nancy North, when we played a concert together at Austin’s Long Center for the Performing Arts.  I was playing in the Austin Civic Orchestra, and she was playing in the Austin Symphonic Band.  I had left a note on her Pink Cadillac asking whether she might be able to help me with some skin issues (dry, flaky forehead and a distinct redness to my skin tone that hadn’t been there when I was younger), and she invited me to be her face model at a Monday night meeting.

I can’t tell you how impressed I was with the Time Wise skin care products I tried!  I’ve never been very good at regular skin care – mostly because I’d never found anything with which I noticed any difference.  I’d tried lots of different cleansers and moisturizers and exfoliators, but none of them had any effect on the dry and flaky skin on my forehead, and none of the concealers or foundations really covered the redness or looked (or felt!) natural to me.  But the first time I tried the Time Wise, I noticed the skin on my forehead was soft, moisturized and smooth!  And when Nancy introduced me to the Mineral Powder Foundation, it’s no exaggeration to say that it was a life-altering experience for me!  I finally found the coverage I wanted, but it was so lightweight that it didn’t feel like I was wearing any makeup at all (I also discovered that I’ve got an Ivory skin tone, not the Beige tone I’d always been buying from other brands – no wonder none of them ever looked quite right!).

Over the next couple of months, Nancy kept in touch with me to see how things were going.  I had lost my day job, and my part-time hypnosis business was very slow at that time.  The last thing I thought I wanted to think about was splitting my focus and starting another new career, but these were products that I could believe in, with an impeccable Satisfaction Guarantee, and a company that had experienced steady growth over the past 47+ years by focusing on their mission to Enrich Women’s Lives.

Still, I had been raised with Avon – my grandmother sold it for as long as I can remember, and she even bought her house with her Avon earnings (what an amazing example she was for me!) – and Mary Kay seemed Way Too Pink for me.  I’m not really a “girly” girl, and I don’t normally wear a lot of makeup (usually, I wore NONE, unless I were performing at a concert or going on a date…).  So it almost seemed like someone else choosing to sign that Agreement, eagerly opening and examining everything in the Starter Kit, and telling everybody I could think of that I had just started (another!) new business!

The more I learned about the Company, and especially about the Mary Kay Foundation, the prouder I became to be associated with it.  There are so many causes and initiatives they support between them that are worthwhile – an aggressive Corporate Recycling program, a strict policy of No Animal Testing, funding for programs to eliminate Domestic Violence and Women’s Cancers.  In fact, I’ve committed to donate $1 to the Foundation for each new face I get to work with, with a goal of being able to donate at least $50 each month!

Yep, I’m happily ensconced in The Pink Bubble now, and I’ve never looked back!  I’m learning to embrace my “girly” side, and I actually enjoy taking care of my skin now!  I’ve set some very ambitious goals for myself – I hope to attract more amazing women onto my team and become a Director and earn the use of that fabulous Mustang that was announced at Seminar in July (I’m still not quite ready to drive around in a Pink car, no matter if it IS a Cadillac!).  If you know someone who is interested in owning her own business, or just earning a little extra money each month, or who wants to have more Girlfriends in her life, please send her in my direction.  I’d love to get to know her – her hopes and dreams, her goals and fears – and find out if the Mary Kay Opportunity could be the right fit for her, her family and her life…
